Maytag Recalls Dishwashers Due to Fire Hazard

Maytag dishwashers sold between July 1997 and June 2001 have been connected to 135 fires. There are 2.3 million dishwashers included in this recall, and as of early Friday, February 2, the company was having trouble keeping up with call volume from concerned consumers.

If you machine may be a part of this recall, go to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's webpage for a list of model numbers. If you see your dishwasher on the list, Maytag advises that you unplug it immediately and call 1-800-675-0535 or visit the company's website.

Real Estate News - Five-Year Real Estate Trends and Prices

The 2006 numbers have finally been tallied, and it turns out that it was quite a cool year. Overall, real estate prices continued to trend upward, but at a much slower rate than in previous years.

What will 2007 hold? Of course, real estate agents and brokers are nervous. They and the folks in the mortgage industry will be watching Fed rates closely in the coming year. The days of easy refinances and quick sales seem to be gone for now. But those professionals who evolve with this current market, rather than clinging to the 'good old days' of just a couple of years ago will continue to do just fine.

In trying to predict the 2007 real estate market, those in the real estate industry are doing some interesting dances. The National Association of Home Builders reverses themselves in two back-to-back articles. On January 15, 2007, they write the optimistic article "Eye On the Economy: Home Sales May Be Firming Up." Just a week later, they draft an article titled http://www.nahb.org/search.aspx?txtkeyword=average+home+price+2006">"Recent Reports to Fed Show More Cooling in Housing Markets."

The National Association of Realtors is covering themselves in a similar fashion. On January 25, 2007, they lead with the article "Existing-Home Sales Ease, Supplies Tighten." On February 1, they write "Pending Home Sales Index Rises." One can't help but wonder if these conflicting reports are drafted with the idea that one set goes to home sellers and the other to home buyers, as the broker or agent sees fit.

When my family was moving to a new city, I realized I would have to find a real estate agent in a place where I didn’t know anyone. Relocating was hard enough. But shopping for a real estate agent in a new city was even worse. I had no contacts, no referrals. I didn’t want to waste a lot of money paying rent when I could own a home in my new town and start building equity. At the same time, I couldn’t find anything on the internet where home buyers and home sellers could rate their real estate agent. I knew I couldn’t be the only person with this need, and so an idea was born.

Rating a real estate agent, through some sort of transaction evaluation, is an idea that brokerages have implemented for quite a while. But they keep their results internal, rather than letting the public see the results. In order to help other people in America who are buying a home, selling a home, or thinking about a “for sale by owner” (FSBO) option, please share your experiences here.
